=========================================================== Rationale: Research shows that a uniformed school dress code can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment. The potential benefits of such a dress code include but are not limited to: decreasing violence and theft -- even life-threatening situations -- among students over designer clothing; instilling students with discipline; helping parents and students resist peer pressure; helping students concentrate on their school work; helping prevent the wearing of gang colors and insignia at school; and helping school officials recognize intruders who come to the school.
Many of our parents have asked for a uniformed dress code. Endorsed by the Byram Middle School PTO, this dress code gives students choices of colors to mix and match their wardrobe. Since it is not a school uniform policy, but a dress code, parents are not restricted to purchasing specific types of uniforms from specific stores. As long as students follow the color combinations, it makes no difference where the clothing is purchased. Each Friday will be “Spirit Day” when students can wear jeans and their choice of shirt. (District Dress Code Applies) This gives them the flexibility to follow the Uniformed Dress Code and still wear jeans one day per week.
With a minimum purchase of only four pair of pants and five shirts, the possible color combinations allow students to wear a different clothing combination twenty days in a row without wearing the same combination twice. And, with the combination of polo collar type, button down, and T-shirts and pants, shorts and skirts, the combinations are endless! Many of you will find that your child already owns several of these clothing combinations, and the stores where you commonly purchase clothing will have these options. Note: Dress Code Policy and Procedures in the District Handbook will apply to our uniformed dress code.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can my child wear the popular polyester basketball shorts as part of the Uniformed Dress Code? A: Yes, as long as they are solid Navy, Khaki, or Black with no numbers or team emblems. (Stripes down the side of shorts or pants are acceptable)
Q: Will students be allowed to wear jeans/denim material each Friday? A: Yes, each Friday will be a “Spirit Day”. This is the ONLY day jean/denim material can be worn.
Q: Can students layer tops as part of the Uniformed Dress Code? A: Yes, as long as the layers meet the dress code color requirements.
Q: Can my child wear a wind suit, Capri or jogging pants as part of the Uniformed Dress Code? A: Again, yes as long as they are solid Navy, Khaki, or Black. P.E. clothing will not change. Any shorts and shirts can be worn during P.E.
Q: Is there a required color for jackets or coats in the winter? A: If the jacket is worn in class, it must be a solid uniform top color. All other jackets must be removed upon entering the building.
Q: Will shirttails have to be tucked inside pants? A: Just as this year, boys are required to tuck in their shirttails. This is not a requirement for girls. Q: Are belts required? A: No, belts are not required, but APPRECIATED! For security reasons we do not allow saggy/baggy clothing.
Q: Can students wear Dickies brand clothing and still be part of the Uniformed Dress Code? A: Yes, any brand of clothing is an acceptable part of the Uniformed Dress Code as long as it meets the dress code color requirements.
Q: Where can I buy the Uniformed Dress Code options? A: Any store that sells the colors.
Q: Does the collar of the shirt have to be the same color as the solid shirt to be in Uniformed Dress Code, and can pants have stripes down the side? A: The collar can be a different color than the solid shirt and still be considered part of the Uniformed Dress Code. Pants or shorts that have stripes down the side are allowable as long as the pant/short is a uniformed dress code bottom color.
